Batticaloa Fort

Batticaloa Fort, located on the eastern coast of Sri Lanka, is a historic landmark that tells the story of the island's colonial past. Built by the Portuguese in 1628, the fort was later captured by the Dutch in 1638 and then the British in 1745, reflecting its strategic importance in maritime trade and defense. Situated near the picturesque Batticaloa Lagoon, the fort is surrounded by water on three sides, creating a stunning view for visitors. Its sturdy stone walls, bastions, and moat are well-preserved, showcasing the architectural ingenuity of the colonial era. Inside, remnants of administrative buildings, storage facilities, and barracks offer a glimpse into its historic role as a military and administrative center. The fort is also linked to local folklore, including tales of mysterious voices heard emanating from the lagoon, adding an element of mystique to its charm. Today, it houses government offices, but its historical and cultural significance continues to attract tourists and history enthusiasts.
