Mannar Fort

Mannar Fort is a historic fortification located in the town of Mannar on the northwest coast of Sri Lanka. Built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and later expanded by the Dutch in the 17th century, the fort was designed to defend the island’s northern coastline from external threats. The fort’s strategic location near the Palk Strait made it an important military base during the colonial period, especially for controlling trade routes and protecting the region from invasions. The fort features typical Dutch architectural elements, such as thick stone walls and bastions, which were designed to withstand artillery fire. Although much of the fort has been eroded over time, Mannar Fort remains an important symbol of the region’s colonial history. The fort’s preservation allows visitors to explore the remnants of its past, offering insights into the military and colonial presence in Sri Lanka. The surrounding area, which includes the natural beauty of the Mannar Islands and the Palk Strait, adds to the fort's appeal as a tourist destination. Today, Mannar Fort stands as a reminder of Sri Lanka’s strategic importance during the colonial period and offers a unique glimpse into the past.
