Sri maha bodhi
The Sri Maha Bodhi, a sacred fig tree in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, is among the most revered religious and historical sites in the world. Planted in 288 BCE, it is believed to be a direct sapling of the original Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India, under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. This tree, over 2,300 years old, holds the distinction of being the oldest documented tree in human history. Brought to Sri Lanka by Sangamitta Theri, the daughter of Emperor Ashoka, during the reign of King Devanampiya Tissa, the Sri Maha Bodhi symbolizes the deep-rooted connection between Buddhism and Sri Lankan culture. The tree stands in the MahamevnÄwa Gardens, surrounded by protective walls and adorned with offerings of flowers, incense, and lamps by devotees. The site attracts pilgrims from across the globe, especially during the Vesak and Poson festivals. It is a focal point for meditation and prayer, embodying peace, wisdom, and spiritual awakening. The Sri Maha Bodhis preservation has been a priority throughout history, with successive rulers and custodians ensuring its survival against natural and human threats. Today, it serves as a timeless symbol of faith, resilience, and the enduring legacy of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.
